Frequently Asked Questions

Experience & Philosophy

Every wedding DJ brings a different personality, philosophy, and approach to weddings. For some DJs, weddings are primarily about equipment and playlists. For others, they are about performance and nightlife energy. For me, weddings have always been about people first. The music matters tremendously, of course, but I believe my responsibilities as your DJ extend far beyond the DJ booth. Long before the dance floor opens, I am helping you navigate timelines, emotions, family dynamics, shifting plans, vendor communication, guest expectations, and the enormous pressure that naturally surrounds a wedding day. Over the years, I have come to believe that the best wedding DJs are not the people with the biggest sound systems or the most expensive lighting; rather, they are the ones who make couples feel comfortable, protected, understood, and genuinely cared for through the entire process. The questions in this section focus less on technical logistics and more on the mindset, professionalism, preparation, communication, and philosophy behind the way I approach weddings and the people who trust me to be part of them.

How Long and How Many?

How long have you been DJing, and how many weddings have you DJed?

If I start at the very beginning, my journey as a DJ began in 1990 when I was just 16 years old. During my high school years, my best friend and I DJed birthday parties, block parties, school dances, and even the installation ball for the American Postal Workers Union in Canton, Ohio. Those early experiences taught me not only how to play music for a crowd, but how to read a room, create energy, and help people celebrate meaningful moments together.

In the autumn of 1991, I attended Bowling Green State University, where I worked as a radio personality while earning my bachelor’s degree, graduating in 1995. After college, I spent several years as a club DJ from 1995 through 1998 and regularly hosted karaoke at local bars through 2000, experiences that further sharpened my microphone work, timing, crowd awareness, and versatility across many different musical styles and audiences.

But when it comes specifically to weddings, I have been doing what I do now for 28 years. During that time, I have DJed more than 700 weddings, helping couples celebrate one of the most important days of their lives with professionalism, preparation, warmth, and a dance floor people genuinely want to join.

types and specialty

What types of events do you DJ, and which type is your specialty?

I provide DJ services for all occasions, including weddings, birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, graduation parties, bar and bat mitzvahs, quinceañeras, corporate events, holiday parties, community events, car shows, and other private celebrations throughout Ohio. That said, weddings make up more than 90% of my bookings and are truly the heart of what I do. I am a romantic at heart, and nothing brings me more joy than helping make my couples’ wedding dreams come true. My mission is to know and understand each couple’s vision so I can help create a celebration that feels authentic, personal, emotionally meaningful, and unforgettable.

Weddings are different from every other kind of event, and they require a very different skill set. A wedding DJ is not simply playing music for a crowd. A wedding DJ is managing timelines, coordinating with photographers and videographers, communicating with planners and venues, reading multiple generations of guests simultaneously, balancing elegance with energy, making announcements naturally and professionally, adapting to constant changes throughout the day, and protecting the overall experience for the couple at the center of it all.

That is why weddings became my focus nearly three decades ago. I genuinely love the emotional weight they carry, the stories behind them, the families gathered in one room, the nervous excitement before introductions, the release of energy once dancing begins, and the privilege of helping guide couples through a day they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Know your DJ

How important is it for us to know our wedding DJ before our wedding day?

I believe it is extremely important. Think about it this way — of all the vendors working your wedding reception, who is the only one helping set the tone from beginning to end? Your wedding DJ. The DJ controls the pacing, atmosphere, emotional energy, transitions, announcements, and flow of the reception for the entire evening. Because of that, it is incredibly important that you hire someone who not only knows how to fill a dance floor and read a room well, but who also makes you feel comfortable, valued, appreciated, and free to be yourselves.

To be honest, there are many talented wedding DJs who mix music exceptionally well and understand crowd psychology. Technical ability absolutely matters. Experience matters. Musical knowledge matters. But I believe something equally important is often overlooked during the hiring process: how your DJ actually makes you feel as a couple. That emotional comfort and trust will significantly shape both your experience throughout the planning process and the overall feeling of your wedding day itself.

My couples are never just “another paycheck” to me. I have never understood why some DJs treat weddings like interchangeable transactions instead of deeply personal celebrations. I treat my couples like old and dear friends, and as it turns out, many of them genuinely do become close friends by the time their wedding day arrives. I value every couple who places their trust in me, and I never take that trust for granted.

Here is the truth of the matter: I am an excellent DJ, but so are many others. What I believe truly sets me apart is my genuine care, dedication, attentiveness, and emotional investment in the people I work with. I would like to think that care shows in everything I do, from the first conversation to the final song of the night. I never rush couples into making decisions they are not ready to make. I never pressure anyone into booking quickly. I am not pushy, and I do not aggressively push larger packages or add-ons because I never know a couple’s budget or financial comfort level. In fact, one of the most heartbreaking things to me is when a bride falls in love with an add-on or enhancement only to realize it is outside her budget.

From our very first conversation until the day you officially book, I want couples to take genuine time deciding whether I am the right fit for their personalities, priorities, vision, and expectations. After all, we will work very closely together throughout the planning process to help create one of the most meaningful days of your lives. Relationships like that should begin with trust, honesty, communication, and mutual respect.

You are placing your faith and trust in me to help give you your happily ever after, and for that reason, I want to give you my absolute best in return. I am always humbled and deeply thankful when couples choose me to be part of such an important chapter of their lives. Is it absolutely imperative that we know one another before the wedding day? No. But getting to know one another truly makes all the difference in the world.

A great wedding DJ is part entertainer, part coordinator, part timekeeper, part therapist, part diplomat, part referee, part firefighter, part hostage negotiator, and part miracle worker.

Meet with Me

Will You Meet with Me to Discuss My Wedding Needs?

Absolutely. I always meet with my couples because I believe nothing is more important than finding the right vendors for your wedding day. The relationship between a couple and their wedding DJ is incredibly important, and I genuinely believe the best way to determine whether I am the right fit for your personalities, priorities, and vision is through real conversation.

All couples receive at least one in-person advance planning meeting prior to the wedding. If you live more than an hour from my home in Canton, Ohio, I simply ask that we meet somewhere roughly halfway between us. If you would strongly prefer that I drive the full distance to you instead, I am absolutely willing to do so, though there is a modest fee to help offset rising travel costs.

If your wedding is booked more than a year in advance, we will typically schedule a second in-person meeting approximately three months before the wedding date as details begin falling into place more concretely. If you book less than a year before your wedding, most subsequent meetings will usually take place through Zoom calls, phone conversations, or email communication. The only major exception is when I am also serving as your officiant, in which case we will schedule an additional in-person meeting focused specifically on the ceremony itself.

Truthfully, I value in-person meetings more than any other form of communication. I much prefer sitting across a table from couples, talking naturally, reading expressions, hearing stories, discussing ideas, and getting to know people in real time rather than through screens. Unfortunately, as my calendar has become increasingly full over the years, reality has caught up with me a bit. Most couples understandably need to meet during weekday evenings or weekends, but weekends are now largely occupied by weddings themselves, and I also host DJ trivia on Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout much of the year.

That means Monday and Wednesday evenings are usually my primary availability for meetings, with the occasional Friday or Sunday mixed in when possible. Add rising travel costs and increasingly packed schedules into the equation, and Zoom meetings have become more necessary than I would personally prefer. Screens create distance, and I will always believe face-to-face interaction is more personal and meaningful whenever possible.

That said, if couples are available during weekday mornings or early afternoons, I am often very happy to arrange additional in-person meetings whenever schedules allow. These meetings genuinely matter because they help us become more comfortable with one another, strengthen communication, and allow us to collaborate more naturally in creating the wedding experience you truly want.

Backup DJ

Do you DJ only one wedding or event per night? Also, is there a backup DJ available should you fall ill or have an emergency?

Absolutely. Your wedding deserves my complete focus and undivided attention, which is why I only book ONE wedding or event per calendar date. I am not a multi-op DJ company managing several weddings simultaneously with different DJs working under a larger umbrella. When you hire me, you get me for the entire evening. My attention is never divided between multiple couples, multiple timelines, or multiple receptions happening at the same time.

I am also always available to stay later than originally scheduled if the celebration is still alive and you would like the night to continue, though additional hours requested the day of the event are billed separately.

As for emergencies, yes, I absolutely do have backup plans in place. My wife Gail is capable of DJing in my place if absolutely necessary, and if she is unavailable, I also have a close friend and experienced DJ named David Huthmacher who is available to step in if needed. The truth, however, is that none of my clients has ever actually met Dave because in nearly three decades of DJing weddings, I have never missed one.

I have DJed weddings while sick with the flu, with broken bones, while recovering from surgery, and even the day after my father passed away. I take the responsibility of being present for my couples incredibly seriously. When people trust me with one of the most important days of their lives, I do not walk away from that commitment lightly.

Still, life happens. Emergencies happen. The fates always hold sway over our lives no matter how prepared we try to be. If something catastrophic ever prevented me from fulfilling my responsibilities, I also have many other trusted friends within the wedding industry who are reputable, experienced DJs and well-known among wedding professionals throughout Ohio. If I ever needed help, they would step in without hesitation. And importantly, if a replacement DJ ever charged more than I do, I would personally pay the difference out of pocket. My couples would never be expected to pay more because of my emergency.

Let’s face it: finding a responsible DJ can sometimes feel difficult enough. Finding an entire team of responsible DJs can feel almost impossible. In fact, “responsible DJ” can occasionally sound like an oxymoron within this industry. I cannot tell you how many frantic calls I have received over the years from couples whose DJs backed out at the last minute or disappeared entirely without communication.

That is not how I operate. I am 100% committed to the weddings and events I accept, and I believe that dedication reflects in both my work and the satisfaction of my couples. When you hire me, you are not sharing me with anyone else that day. You receive my full attention, full preparation, and full commitment from beginning to end.

emcee

Do you emcee my reception, and is that included in the price?

Absolutely. Every wedding and event package includes full master of ceremony responsibilities. I emcee the reception, make all requested and necessary announcements, coordinate formalities according to your itinerary, and help ensure the evening flows naturally and smoothly from one moment to the next.

That said, I believe there is a major difference between being an effective emcee and trying to become the star of the wedding. My job is to guide the evening professionally, warmly, and confidently while always keeping the focus where it belongs: on the couple and their guests.

Most people can remember attending at least one wedding where the DJ talked far too much, tried too hard to be funny, inserted themselves constantly into the spotlight, or treated the reception like their own personal comedy routine. That is not who I am, and it is not how I approach weddings. You are not hiring me to perform stand-up comedy or become the center of attention. I do not have a “schtick,” a gimmick, or a rehearsed routine that I force onto every reception regardless of the couple’s personalities.

If you are looking for a DJ doing the Chicken Dance on top of a speaker while screaming into the microphone all night, you are probably out of luck. I am not that DJ, though I can certainly refer you to DJs who are.

What I will provide is a smooth-flowing reception with strong microphone etiquette, natural crowd engagement, professional announcements, and a warm, upbeat presence that helps guests feel informed, comfortable, and connected throughout the evening. My role as emcee is to guide the room, maintain momentum, communicate clearly, and help transitions feel effortless without ever overpowering the celebration itself.

At the end of the day, you hire me to entertain your guests primarily through music, atmosphere, timing, and emotional flow, and that is exactly what I promise to do. My goal is to help create a dance floor people genuinely want to join while ensuring your wedding day feels everything you hoped it would be.

Your guests should remember how your wedding felt,

not how often your DJ talked into a microphone.

attire

What will you wear to my reception?

That is entirely up to you. My attire should reflect the atmosphere, formality, and overall tone of your wedding day, so I always allow my couples to decide how formal or relaxed they would like me to dress.

If you give me permission to dress comfortably and blend casually into the environment, I will dress business casual—dress pants or khakis with either a neutral polo or short sleeved collared shirt. If you would prefer a dress shirt and tie, I am happy to dress more formally. If you want me in a full suit or tuxedo, I will absolutely dress the part.

There is only one exception to this, however: during Summer weddings, I will wear a full suit or tuxedo only if both the ceremony and reception are indoors and air conditioned. Outdoor Summer weddings in formal attire can quickly become physically brutal, especially during load-in, setup, and teardown while moving heavy equipment for hours in extreme heat and humidity. Aside from that one practical limitation, however, my attire is completely your choice.

More importantly, I believe wedding DJs should look professional, polished, and appropriate for the atmosphere of the celebration without ever drawing unnecessary attention to themselves. The focus should always remain on the couple and the experience of the guests, not on the DJ trying to become part of the show.

wedding visitation

Can I come and watch you at a wedding?

All of the weddings I DJ are private events, and out of respect for my couples and their guests, I do not allow uninvited individuals to attend simply to observe me working. Weddings are deeply personal celebrations, and I believe couples deserve privacy, comfort, and the ability to fully enjoy their day surrounded only by the people they intentionally chose to invite.

It is also important to understand that no two weddings are ever the same. Every couple has different personalities, musical tastes, family dynamics, traditions, priorities, comfort levels, and visions for their reception. One wedding may be elegant and understated while the next is wild, loud, and nonstop from beginning to end. Because of that, seeing me at another couple’s wedding would not necessarily reflect what your own celebration would feel like.

That said, I absolutely understand why couples want reassurance before hiring a DJ, which is one of the reasons I maintain both a video gallery on my website and an active business presence on social media. All videos posted to my YouTube channel are available to watch on my website. These videos showcase both my performance style and the types of dance floors I help create throughout the evening.

I also regularly upload videos to my Facebook business page because, increasingly, YouTube aggressively flags or removes wedding reception footage due to music licensing restrictions, something that frustrates many DJs since music is obviously central to what we do. Weddings are one of the few professions where documenting our work almost automatically creates copyright issues because there is always licensed music playing in the background.

Still, between my website videos, Facebook uploads, reviews, blog content, planning meetings, and conversations with me directly, I believe couples can get a very strong sense not only of my ability as a DJ, but also of who I am as a person and how seriously I take the responsibility of helping create an unforgettable wedding experience.

Plan and Coordinate

Since you attend weddings every weekend, can you help me plan and coordinate my wedding?

Yes, absolutely! I have spent nearly three decades attending weddings almost every weekend, which means I have seen what works beautifully, what creates stress unnecessarily, what keeps receptions flowing naturally, and what unintentionally disrupts momentum or creates logistical problems later in the evening. Over the years, I have collected, tested, refined, and proven countless ideas that help receptions feel smoother, more organized, more comfortable, and ultimately more enjoyable for both couples and their guests.

While I am a DJ first and foremost, reception planning and coordination involve far more than simply choosing songs. Funny as it sounds, some of the most important work your DJ does is not music-related at all. A Spotify account, an iPhone, and a Bluetooth speaker can technically play music at a wedding. It may not sound very good, the pre-planned playlist can not read a room and may decrease the likelihood of dancing,  and taking requests prohibits you from attending your wedding as you are forced into the role of DJ—but it can absolutely be done. What couples are truly hiring a professional wedding DJ for is everything happening behind the scenes: timeline management, vendor communication, pacing, coordination, emotional awareness, adaptability, troubleshooting, and helping ensure that all of the moving parts of the reception come together smoothly so the couple’s vision is protected throughout the night.

You simply tell me the type of atmosphere and experience you want to create, and I can offer suggestions to help make that vision happen. Whether that means helping structure the timeline, deciding when to schedule formalities, discussing guest flow, planning the transition from dinner into dancing, or helping determine which traditions fit your personalities best, I am always happy to share ideas and guidance whenever couples want it.

My goal is for you to actually enjoy your wedding day alongside your guests rather than spending the evening stressed, worried, or trying to manage logistics yourselves. I want you laughing, dancing, celebrating, hugging people, taking photographs, and making memories while I quietly help keep everything moving behind the scenes. That comfort and confidence come from collaboration, preparation, communication, and the experience I bring to the questions couples ask throughout the planning process.

Anybody can look polished when everything is going according to plan.

Weddings have a way of revealing who genuinely cares about people and who is only there for a paycheck.

Recommended Vendors

Can you recommend other vendors?

Absolutely, and I am always happy to do so. Over nearly three decades in the wedding industry, I have worked alongside countless photographers, videographers, planners, coordinators, officiants, florists, caterers, bakers, musicians, rental companies, stylists, and other wedding professionals throughout Ohio. Some have been truly extraordinary. Others, candidly, have not. Experience teaches you very quickly that talent alone is not what separates a merely “good” wedding vendor from a truly exceptional one.

The best wedding professionals are not simply the people with the flashiest websites, the biggest advertising budgets, the most polished Instagram feeds, or the highest visibility on massive wedding directories like The Knot and WeddingWire. Those platforms often reward visibility and advertising dollars more than heart, emotional investment, or genuine care for couples. Some of the finest wedding vendors I have ever worked with are not dominating Google rankings or paying enormous sums for sponsored placements. In many cases, they are simply too busy serving their couples exceptionally well every weekend to spend all of their time chasing algorithms and exposure.

The vendors I recommend are people I genuinely trust and believe in because I have personally seen how they operate when weddings become emotional, stressful, unpredictable, and deeply human. I pay attention to how vendors communicate, how they treat couples and families, how they carry themselves under pressure, how prepared they are, how they collaborate with others, and whether they genuinely care about protecting the couple’s vision throughout the day. Weddings reveal character very quickly. Some vendors rise to the occasion beautifully. Others make the day more difficult than it needs to be.

The vendors featured on my Recommended Vendors page are not there because of paid partnerships, referral agreements, advertising arrangements, or obligations. In fact, many of them probably do not even know they are listed there. They are included because I have personally witnessed their professionalism, kindness, composure, communication, adaptability, talent, and genuine dedication to the couples they serve.

A great wedding is not simply about hiring talented people. It is about hiring the right people — vendors who understand that the day is not about them, who know how to support the experience without dominating it, and who care just as deeply about protecting your wedding day as you do. Those are the professionals I am proud to recommend.
